Stephen is royalty. He fronted one of Australia's most loved and iconic bands. His solo albums are scenic tours of emotional landscapes, commentary on popular culture and he's unintentionally hip, plus he writes books. I'd met him through mutual friends but it wasn't until I started booking him to play at a venue I was working for we developed a telephone friendship and talking to him was often the highlight of my day. Always funny, smart and oddball but never mundane I was starstruck and felt almost cheeky when I finally got around to asking him to sing with me. But here we are doing this sad story of a pining lover who can't fess up to lingering feelings of loss.
